Through the good times and bad.

Whew... school is done. well for four weeks anyway. Time for a much needed break and a margarita. It's been a  while since my last update. Allen and I have been through a lot the past few weeks. I had a stomach flu from one of the kids in the Nursery. All i can say is yuck.  Allens' great aunt passed away Sunday at the ripe old age of 90. He spent most of his summers over there running between her house and his grannies. The funeral was Wednesday and of course it hit just when finals were so I couldn't go. After working a 12 hours shift, he drove 2.5 hours to Lenior City (near Knoxville) for the funeral then drove back home. Once he got in the door he started throwing up with a 100 degree fever. Needless to say, I slept in the guest bedroom last night. All better today, though. Kept down all sorts of things.

The Lord works in mysterious ways. His timing doesn't always match up with my timing or when I see things happening. Sometimes I don't always understand why things happen or why it happens to some people and not to others. Why things happen to the people that do the right things. Do everything their suppose to, follow the right steps and then get kicked to the curb. While others who go about things the wrong way prosper and flourish. Sometimes we don't understand His purpose but I just have to believe that he has a plan for me and my family.

Trust in the Lord and do good; so you will live in the land, and enjoy security. Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him. (Psalm 37:3-5, 7a)

Food out the ears

I think Allen and I have had enough turkey until next year. Our first year Thanksgiving as Mr. and Mrs. Harvey included 3 Thanksgiving dinners, plus Thanksgiving breakfast.

#1- Grandma Covington's (My mom's mom)
Allen and I were responsible for the green bean casserole and cranberry sauce. I only accounted for the people that are usually at family dinner not the extra people that were coming that day. Luckily gran had extra to double it. Of course, I double it and how much gets eaten? Less than HALF! Who is eating left over green bean casserole for the next week. This person. We remembered to bring the can or cranberry sauce but we forgot to get it out of the fridge. haha

Thanksgiving  Breakfast @ Grandma Covington's
Every year we go to grandmas, cook breakfast, and look at black friday ads. This year, my uncle, aunt and cousins were in but Allen decides he isn't going to go. He is going to stay in bed. 830 on the dot, at grandmas with a paper helping her cook. My dad comes in and what does he do? He breaks the tradition! He opens the paper before breakfast! 11 soon arrives and I am off to Thanksgiving #2.

#2- Nanny (Allen's Grandmother)
This time we were not responsible for anything. Nothing was burnt. We remembered the cranberry sauce with the rings. Turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, broccoli casserole, dressing. Eat, Clean up, Done.

#3- Phillips (Dad's mom)
It seemed like before we were even done with #2 we were off to #3 and when they got there they were cleaning up. haha. Hope you weren't hungry? We had apple pie, pumpkin pie, and angel food cake covered in whipped cream. Gram is the best with dessert.

I am done with Turkey. Time to get back to the gym.

Hat Lady

I am a lady of many hats. I am a student, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a clothes washer, a baby rocker, two year old tamer, teacher, cancer survivor, friend, baker, boo boo kisser, chemist, and many more. But one of my favorite hats that I get to wear is my teacher hat. Currently I teach 2 classes.

On Sunday mornings approximately from 10-12:30 you can find me in the two year old room at WOC. For seven years I have taught the same age and love it. I love getting the new little ones just after their 2nd birthday and love graduating those at their 3 year old mark. I get to love on them and teach them about Jesus and how much he loves them and then I get to send them home fully of goldfish and lemonade. YUM!

The other class I teach is my 7-12 year olds on Tuesday nights.  If you are bored and want something entertaining to do, come by, sit in and just listen. I love this group of kids. For the most part they are the same every week. So, the relationship we get to form as a class is so much fun. We do a craft and lesson every week. This month we are studying thanksgiving (considering it is November). This past Tuesday we made tambourines and talked about praising and thanking God through music. Each week will be themed around thanking God for what we have and have been blessed with. This group is neat to talk to. They are starting to form their own opinions about subjects. Learning what the bible really means and expanding on Jesus Loves me, made me and wants to be my friend forever.

As for Allen and I, we are great. Quickly approaching the 3 month mark and his birthday as well. We are only the same age for 11 weeks. Now that EYH (science and math conference for high school and middle school girls) is over school is beginning to pick up. Only 5 weeks left. Let the countdown begin.

bigger bed

Five days/nights a week, I have the bed to my self at night and he has the bed to himself during the day except for the few hours in between him coming home from work and me getting up for the day. So we have become accustomed to being about to sleep how we want, comfortably. Except for Wednesday and Thursday nights. Don't get me wrong, I love when he is home and we get to spend the evenings together.

Last night, or Allen's Sunday as he calls it, was funny. Crawled in bed and before the lights went out we talked and goofed off a little bit. Some how we got on the subject of how I look when he comes in from work which then morphed into Allen and his new love, or Ashely and Allens' new love, the CPAP. Then we got on the subject sides of the bed. Now, out bed has a distinct line down the middle of the head board, which Allen says is off center. I'm on one side and he is on the other. Not the case, I am on 1/3 of the bed and he has the other 2/3. I think at least 2-3 times during the night you'll hear "Allen, scoot over. I'm falling off the bed!" Thus, we need a bigger bed.

Mr. and Mrs.

I can't believe that 9 weeks have gone by already. Excited to see what God has in store for us the next 50+ years.

After the wedding had settled down, i began to ask myself "what will become of this blog?" It was my refuge for all things wedding and now that it is over, what to do.....

I figured well, will turn it into an "us" blog. We are newlyweds, which means there will be many ups and downs in our life. No, that does not mean when Allen and I get in an argument I will post all about it divulge all the deepest secrets. Instead all the funny stuff we go through, discover, and learn. Will try some new amazing recipes....

I belong to an amazing group of ladies who were all married in August. There are 110 of us who all chat and converse about all things pre and post wedding. But now the weddings are over, we share pictures and stories that have helped us become super close. A lot of these ladies live up north so are able to meet up and see each face to face. 8 of our wonderful women are expecting! Excited and looking forward to follow everyone's journey.

Just heard that Wedding pictures will be done on Tuesday. Until then here are some more teasers.

8 weeks

8 weeks.... No i am not 8 weeks pregnant but it got you to click on my blog

Tomorrow marks 8 weeks. It doesn't feel like 8 weeks. It seems like just last week it was a few days before the wedding. Scrambling around trying to finish last minute details to make sure the day goes perfect. Little did i know that just 3 days later, our special day we had been planning 8 months for would be over within ours (which actually felt like minutes). So many things went wrong that day, but i wouldn't change any of it.

Now, it is 10:45 on this Friday Night. My husband is at work and i am lying in bed watching last nights episode of Gray's Anatomy. There is laundry i could put away, laundry i could wash, textbook i could be reading but after this week, i need a vacation!

My husband is learning new differences between girls and boys since we got married. For men, shopping is easy. Go in to a store and 10 minutes later walk out with 3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, underwear and a belt. For women (meaning me), it would take at least an hour to find the 2 pairs of pants. So when we went shopping this afternoon, i was expected to and told to get what i needed within 15-20 minutes other wise i would be left at said store. Needless to say, i was successful. Normally i wouldn't go shopping for me with my husband but it was on the way home, i was tired and ready for a nap.

After a late night of tears and many tissues last night, i was not an easy riser this morning when the alarm went off. We were going to shoot. Not photography but guns. Allen and his coworkers are obsessed! (no offense Amy Jo). We got there about 9, they didn't start until 10ish and we left about 230. So after lunch and our adventure at Walmart, I was pooped. An hour nap, that was all i was going to take. Just an hour. Which quickly turned into 2 hours and caused me to not have time to bake the cake i promised i would make.

new recipes

Well, thanks to my husband, we now have a new favorite chicken recipe. We were starting to get tired of the baked chicken, fried chicken, grilled chicken, lemon pepper chicken, chicken casserole. Here is our new favorite dish.
Baked Chicken Dijon

1/4 cup dijon mustard
1/4 cup evaporated milk
1/4 cup plain bread crumbs
1/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1. Pre-heat oven to 475 and spray 13x9 inch baking dish with non stick spray
2. Mix mustard and milk in bowl.  mix bread crumbs and cheese in a bowl. Dip chicken into mustard bowl coating both sides. then pat chicken into bread mixture coating both sides. place breaded chicken into baking dish.
3. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until chicken is golden brown.

Stress Reliever

Since school began, things have become a little crazy and stress full.
Just this coming week:
  • Monday: Biology Test, Test at doctor
  • Tuesday: Speech Day, Paper Due, Work
  • Wednesday: Work, Biology Lab test, WISE Meeting
  • Thursday: Speech Day, Microbiology Test, work
  • Friday: EYH work
Allen loves my new stress reliever. At first he just thought that i was trying all these new recipes but there was a hidden agenda. Yes, my new stress reliever is baking and cooking. So far since school has began, 3 orange pineapple cakes, lemon pie, chicken casserole, many dinners, omelets and today's recent pumpkin pie....And well here they are. My two first pumpkin pies of the season and of my marriage.
And the verdict is... Well lets just say Allen took the trash out on his way to work.

LOSER

Well he did it. He remembered to pick up his underwear everyday for a week, I actually thought he would forget. I also thought he forgot about the deal until I was putting together our new oscillating fan and he reminded me that this week he gets to sleep as long as he wants. BOO!!!

What have I learned in the 5 weeks we have been married?
  • This room is a lot smaller than I thought.
  • Allen has to have music while he showers even if he is only in for five minutes.
  • A way to a mans heart is through his stomach. Whether that is cake, pie, chicken, or macaroni.
  • 2 people go through more laundry than 1.
  • The trash is only full when it is over flowing.
I LOVE being married. Our relationship has grown more in these five weeks that in the 6 years we were dating. I guess marriage changes you. Whether is it cooking dinner together, snuggling before he goes into work, or playing scrabble while watching Golden Girls.

Winner or Loser

5 days into our game and so far I am LOSING! My husband is actually remembering to pick up his underwear off the bathroom floor. Maybe with only 2 days let he will slip up lol.

I keep wondering and thinking how do I manage it all. Everyday (except Wednesday and Thursday), Allen gets home from work at 630. I get up, shower, eat breakfast and head off to school. When I get home he is still asleep. I do homework, laundry, some cleaning then go off to work or wait for him to wake up and head off to work at 900. Still a big adjustment but getting slowly used to it.

Let's play a game

Let's play a game! In the Harvey/Stephens house we are playing a game. This game involves Allen and his underwear. He has to pick up his underwear every day for a week starting Sunday. If he forgets/ I win then NO XBOX for a month. If he remembers/ I lose then I have to let him sleep as late as he wants for a whole week. We will see how this goes.

Now that the wedding is over, I began to step back and take an overview of the day. That is the part I remember. Here is a sneak peak of our beautiful day.

Our first Month

Next Tuesday rings in our 1 month anniversary. What could happen in 1 month you say? Well when you mesh Allen, I, plus all of my stuff, our wedding stuff and Allens' stuff shoved into our tiny room. Allen works night if you haven't found that out. So i am left alone for 5 nights a week. That has left me in a time of transition after leaving my previous home with my parents, sister and brother. My sister and I had shared a room for 15ish years. Now having a room completely to myself is a big change. However, to Allen and my moms humor I have found a way to sleep (pic to come later). After days of experimenting with sleeping pills, warm milk, and back rubs i figured it out. SIDEWAYS. Yes I sleep from side to side instead of head to foot. When Allen came in from work he would always wonder why i am sprawled out across the bed. TADA!

Married life isn't all fine and dandy. More laundry, more cooking and learning to deal with another person besides myself. The underwear on the bathroom floor. Learning all the finance stuff. I love being married but it is a hard adjustment.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

4 days. I didn't think that I would be saying in less than a week I would marry my high school sweetheart.
Crazy busy around my house. Between the packing, packing for the cruise, wedding stuff scattered EVERYWHERE!, and cleaning. Moving boxes over to Allen's house. Move all his stuff around to allow room for mine.

almost there

10 Days! 10 Days. I didn't think it would come this quickly. Met with Pastor Tim on Monday. I think i was nervous the whole time. Not because I was meeting with him but because the meeting was about the ceremony wording and order. Everything seems to be playing out just right, well for the most part. Just little tweekes here and there. Mainly centerpieces, tables and odds and ends that have to be done. I totally forgot that I need to start packing for our vacation. Been so rapped up in the wedding details that I haven't packed anything or washed really anything either.

School is ALMOST over! so excited. This semester has been fast and hit hard. Don't think i want to do this again.

Packing, packing and more packing in between school, work, and home life. Trying to pack everything that I have accumulated in the past 16 years is not so easy. Took down my wall stuff yesterday, well almost all of it.  Boxes, boxes and more boxes as a result of the packing, packing and more packing. I can see the light though.

halfway there

After today, 13 more days left of summer school. I don't think I will have ever been more excited for a semester to end. Except for the 3 semesters ago when I took an English course with a professor my father had and he was the worst. So this semester comes in a very close second.
Ran into the wedding coordinator last night before work. "4 weeks?" she asked. "No 2 weeks 4 days" I replied. It gave me the chills. After all this time and the years waiting until the right time when both of us were steady in our lives, it is almost here.
What's left? Well the flowers are suppose to be ordered today. The RSVP date is Saturday and then we can get the final head count for the number of tables. At that point we can get the centerpieces done. I think that is all that is left. As of right now anyway.
I continue to pack. As i pack it feels like all the years my sister and I have shared a room (15 to be exact) are going into those boxes. The pillow fights, jumping off the bunk beds, taping down the middle of the room (1/2 was mine and the other 1/2 was hers and we couldn't walk or put anything on the others side). Slumber parties, tents, when we attempted to create a hammock out of a bed sheet on the side of the bunk bed so one didn't have to sleep on the top (massive fail). Lots of memories in that room that will be missed.
Bridal shower #2 was Saturday. Thanks to everyone who came. It was truly special with all my coworkers, friends and women who have helped me grow up throughout the years. We received but loads of stuff. Pots and pans, loads of kitchen stuff, a pillow, television stand and gift cards to be used at a later date. We are blessed indeed.

Now what to do... Just wait. Wait and be patient!

sleep deprivation

Three days into this summer class and I am dragging! up at 6. shower. drive to school. park between 710-720. Physics lab 7:30. Physics lecture 10:15. Short lunch break. Biochemistry 12:50-3:10. Tuesdays and Thursdays Biochemistry lab at 330-550. Then off to work (tuesdays and thursdays) until 845ish. Repeat for 22 more weekdays. I know it was my decision but NEVER LET ME DO IT AGAIN!!!! Will definitely need eye concealer for the wedding day.

As for the wedding? Everything is coming along. Flowergirl dresses FINALLY ordered after weeks of searching and browsing online. We just went with ordering two online and they come with a matching hair piece. Now just to get shoes and bloomers.

Today is 31 days until the BIG day. RSVP's are pouring in. Which is a huge relief to me, Allen could care less. But that's a man for you. He sweats NOTHING, I sweat everything.

Friday is a big day for us, well me especially. Once I get out of class, we are going to go get our marriage license!  Then I have me hair consultation for the wedding. Which means i have to actually decide what I want done with it. Then just after that I have my final fitting for my dress. It should be all done (crossing fingers).

where to put it all

So, when I normally send a letter or mail within the city of Murfreesboro it usually takes 2 days. Not with the invitations. 1 day. What a surprise!

Began to slowly pack boxes a few months ago. Packed a few more this past week. including winter stuff,  T shirt's that are not worn that much, keep sakes, things that were hanging on the walls, all my craft stuff for church, purses and books. I guess the saying was right... you don't know how much stuff you have until you have to pack it all up. But 18 years in this house carries a lot of stuff that is just mine.

But now where to put it all. Suppose to get the paperwork ready for the apartment this week. Along with getting the music list and slideshows done before my summer classes start next week. Yes, i do believe I am going crazy. 2 summer classes in five weeks. Physics 2 and biochemistry. One final the 11th, another final the 12th and the wedding the 13th.

through good times and bad

Allen and I have had quite a few ruff patches since we started dating. 10 months before we began dating, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. 6 months after we started dating I was diagnosed with epilepsy. But he looked past all that and saw me. He went to doctors appointments with me, sat with me through the seizures, medication changes, drove me wherever when i couldn't drive. He truly is my prince charming that God sent me.

Tomorrow is my seven year MRI. Tomorrow is also the corresponding appointment, which usually never happens on the same day. Seven years since my parents were told that I (their oldest daughter) had a brain tumor that needed to be removed. May 13 was the day my mother was told there was something in my brain. June 11, surgery day. I still get antsy every year. Although i know the routine of it all i still have the worst anxiety about it.

a mark off the list

51 days and counting. I knew it would go by fast but not as fast as it has gone so far. Saturday, we will have been engaged 6 months. That's 182 days that have gone by. Progress has been made since Saturday.

Met with the caterer on Monday. Reception planned. Food decided. Cake finally picked if I don't change my mind again for like the 20th time. Invitation envelopes addressed but not stuffed yet. Hopefully going to get part of that accomplished today.

Wedding shower #1 was a bust. Well it was a couples shower. Then it rained and rained and rained. So all the activities that went along with the shower were to be canceled too. I, well we, just made the executive decision to cancel it. Allen's coworkers still came over, well a 3 of them, and we grilled out. We were both pretty bummed but it was a nice evening.

What's left on the list?

Saturday, June 18, 2011

56 days in counting.
Things are starting to slow down yet speed up in an instance. All but 1 of the bridesmaids dresses are in (my sister's being the one left). Luckily hers doesn't need to be hemmed like two of the others.

Allen and I are doing well. We have our days when I am so stressed and he is stressed. one of us says something that sets the other off. Example: wedding rings are not picked or ordered. But in the end the love is all that matters.

Life as we know it

Right now... I am just tired. After not sleeping well two nights ago, and still trying to recover, I am just pooped. I found my wedding shoes or as a coworker stated "my cinderella slippers". After searching through 7 department/shoe stores I knew these were the ones as soon as I walked in.

Now it's just getting everything else done. First wedding dress fitting on Wednesday, friends wedding on Friday, my little sister graduates from high school on Saturday and we (my family except for Allen) leave for Connecticut on the 5th of June for my Uncle's Navy retirement celebration. Once we get back it will be  10 weeks until the wedding and 4 weeks until summer school begins.Wedding showers on the 3rd and 22nd of June and one on July 23rd. So what's left to do? Jewelry, finalize the reception with Chris (caterer), order invitations (i know, i know), programs, center pieces, finalize with cake baker, flower girl baskets, music, scan pictures for slide show, decide on wedding bands, more but too much going through my head.

When we went to our wedding counseling, the lady explain the difference between a mans brain and a woman's brain. Women have a ball of string. Everything is intertwined. For instance, right now i am thinking about what to write, the wedding, summer school, lesson plans for church, EYH workshops for MTSU, need to do laundry, wedding ideas, family stuff. However, a man's brain is very different. They have a one room brain like a hotel. Everything has a room and you can't be in two rooms at the same time. Like Allen cant play Call of Duty and talk wedding. It is just impossible. Or talk and eat at the same time. It is either one or the other.

Oh the insainity...

Things have begun to pick up on my end. Bridesmaid dresses are almost ordered (except for my sisters). Still in search of flowergirl dresses. You know when have a picture of something in your mind and are in search of that picture. Well that is what i am going through. Little white puffy dresses that seems to be hard to find as Christmas. Ross, Marshal's, TJ Max, Belk, Walmart, Children's place, Gymbori, Baby Gap, Sears, JC Penny's all a negative. Still looking any ideas?
Perfecting the guest list at this moment before we go order the invitations this week. Hopefully this week.

Engagement Pictures

Finally!

After several weeks of scheduling and rescheduling, they are finally done. We had to work between tornadoes, torrential down pours, finals and sleep patterns.  Just a sampling...

4 months

As of this past Wednesday, it is officially for months until the wedding. I feel as though I am so behind. Invitations have not been ordered, flowers are still in the air, groomsmen have not been fitted for tuxes, cake has not been ordered. However, we have picked out the center pieces, bridesmaid dresses are in the process of being ordered,  we have an idea on the food.

It seems like forever since my last post. Okay almost 2 months, but things have been pretty crazy. On the 26th of March, we went to our marriage counseling class. From 9-3, we were head deep into our relationship. We discovered so much that we did not know about each other after all this time. One thing we have to work on is communication. Talking things out when we are upset is one thing we both are not good with.

168 day... I can tell already those day are going to go fast. Between school and work, wedding planning has kind of been pushed to the back burner. However, we are slowly getting things done.

Color Scheme : check

Pictures to come soon.

Slow going

185 days. We are getting so excited! Allen's grandmother found this puppy at a friends apartment complex. No tags, no collar.  Land lord said she hadn't seen anyone claim it. So it is ours. Monday, we took Bailey to get checked out and to make sure he was not microchipped. Luck for us, he wasn't. Bailey is a Shi Tzu puppy. About 1 year old and healthy.

my "swishy" spot

210 Days! I can tell already that they are going to go by fast. If you didn't know already, i would say 95% of the people who read this, i am a cancer survivor. Seven years this June. A brain tumor at 15 isn't something I would recommend for anyone let alone myself. When we looked at the scans after surgery and all there was was a round "swishy " spot as my mom called it. Doctors said it was an Astrocytoma Brain Tumor.

And today, I am cancer free. A childhood cancer survivor. However, the tumor and surgery did come with its "leftovers".  I now have a new friend that will probably stick with me for life. I am a 6 year epileptic. In the beginning it was a constant battle. The surgery was in June of 2004 and by October 2004 the Seizures had began. I was taken out of school in December 2004 because we could not get them under control. If i were to have a seizure at school, I could potentially harm myself or others. So, my parents opted for me to be placed into a home bound program. After numerous trips back and forth to Vanderbilt that Winter, i finally went back to school the follow February. Soon after that, Allen and I met. It wasn't weird between us. He looked passed the cancer and the epilepsy to who i was on the inside.

Well today, my mom and I went to the Neurologist. No seizures for almost two years! What a blessing!

Are things downhill from here? Not a chance. School started yesterday and I am glad I got all the wedding stuff done that I did. Looking at the course load, I am going to be slammed.

Saturday, January 8, 2011

Now it's time to switch gears. Bridesmaid dresses are picked, flower girl dresses are chosen, church is reserved, and the color is the final color.

School starts Wednesday. Which means no real down time between school and work. But it also means 150ish days to fit in my dress. 150 days until final fitting.

One of my new years resolution:
Fit into my wedding dress and not have to put the corset in the back.

I want it to be able to zip, no problem. 150 days. I can do it.

The colors of the rainbow

I think picking out the colors that will be the central theme of the wedding has been the hardest thing yet. Yes I know it is January 4 and the wedding is August 13. But, considering I go back to school in a few days and Allen, well sleeps all day and works all night. It just seems best to figure some of this out now, rather than stressing out about it along with school (Physics, Biology, 2 Education classes, and Chemistry Research).

The colors that expressed favoritism by my friends on facebook were as follows:
  • yellow
  • orange
  • pink
  • red
  • turquoise
  • lavender
  • blue
  • brown
  • goldenrod
  • champayne
  • charcole
  • bubble gum pink
  • periwinkle
  • light green
  • blush
  • purple
As many of you know I can not make up my mind about many things. Then i am put in front of 42 colors and told to pick one......very hard to do.

However, we are down to two colors after much deliberation. Solid black for the maid of honor/bridesmaids with either a pink sash or a clover sash.

We're Engaged!!!

Well folks, it's finally official. We are getting married after all this time. I am so excited.

It was Christmas morning and as tradition in my family goes, we always open presents at my grandmothers Christmas morning as early as people wake up. Which is usually 8 or 9 o'clock now a days. We begin opening presents. My brother got his skateboards, my sister got her leather boots and I clothes and jewelry. Allen had opened my present to him, Call of Duty: Black Ops for XBox. All the presents were opened except for one. His present to me.
Unwrapping the Winnie the Pooh wrapping paper led me to this box. Then i took off the lid......

And found another little box. At this point the whole family was staring. What could it be? Then the next lid....

Allen's Christmas ring tone for me was All I Want For Christmas. Thinking there were no more boxes, there was one more.....
At this point in the opening process I started crying. As i look up he is on his knee in his comfy sweatpants in front of my whole family.

I don't actually remember saying yes. Actually i don't think i said yes. Maybe it was just assumed. Not sure. hahaha.
